I was just looking at DD's new Felicity doll & realized that she, ummm, well, she has no panties . I looked at the website & it doesn't mention any with her meet outfit & her undergarment set does not have any either. Did Colonial girl's really not wear any panties? Just curious. Actually, it's accurate. Few people wore "underwear" as we think of it today. When underwear were necessary for a woman (if you catch my drift) she wore a kind of belt with full length pants under it. Bloomers or drawers didn't hit the scene until the mid-19th Century.

According to a couple of ladies in a Yahoo group I'm in (one of whom worked as a costumed interpreter and the other is very good with history, loves Williamsburg and costumes and is just plain smart, hey Catherine (sewcial), that means you!)
Anyway, no, Colonial women and girls only wore what you see on the outside plus the underslips and stays and things. I think smaller girls wore the shift that you'll see that comes on Felicity and Elizabeth. It was funny, the interpreter (being modern I'm sure they, well...wear something underneath the costumes, ahem) said it does get so hot in those costumes that anything less to deal with at restroom time in those days would have been a good thing!
Hopefully Catherine will jump in on this and explain it much better than I could because I'm just being a parrot and repeating what I've learned/heard. Hope it helps a little in the meantime! (It bugs me a little about the undies too, I might just be a stinker and order Felicity some cute ones like Kailey has from someone on ebay--or make them!)

I remember Oprah's show that she did showing a guest visit she and her friend made to the PBS Colonial House. They had to be extremely authentic about everything, and she made a big deal about nothing under the skirts.

Learn something new everyday. Thanks for all the replys & info. on the authenticity of Felicity's attire. I just wonder what little girl's think when they see she has no panties on & the other doll's do. I'm guessing then that Kaya is the same? Funny, I just never really thought about it. They did wear everything else & then some under those Colonial gowns.

"Felicity comes dressed in a flower-striped gown edged in ruffles. Underpants
were not worn in 1774, but under the gown there is a simple shift." That used to be the way it was described in the catalog.
